THE CAPTAINS:

32 Melissa Painter     Senior 5'7" Shooting Guard
Coach's comments on Melissa:
Melissa is the most experienced Varsity player on the team. She played on the Freshmen team before joining the Varsity team as a Sophomore. Her experience her first year allowed her to have a successful Junior year. She led last year's team in scoring and was voted to the All-Delta League First Team and named the team's Most Valuable Player. Melissa is a solid perimeter shooter and does a quality job defensively, anticipating the opponent's offensive patterns. The team voted Melissa captain because of her example and her experience.

34 Ashley Peterson Senior 5'11" Power Forward
Coach's comments on Ashley:
Ashley joins Melissa as captain this year as the second most experienced Varsity player. She began her Freshman year on the Varsity team. At the mid-point of the season she elected to play on the JV team to receive more playing time. She returned to the Varsity team last year and became a consistent starter early in the season. Last year, she was named the team's Most Improved Player. Ashley is an ideal captain as she always is positive and supportive of her teammates.

RETURNING VARSITY PLAYERS:

31 Stephanie Lopez Junior 5'7" Point Guard
Coach's comments on Stephanie:
Stephanie is returning after a quality Sophomore campaign as the Varsity team's starting point guard. She has begun this season as an improved shooter and is still a quality defender. Last season, Stephanie was named the Varsity team's Best Defensive Player. She missed the All-Delta League First Team by one vote but made the Second Team as a Sophomore. She was the team leader in assists and has always had the ability to pass to set up her teammates to score. Stephanie handles the team well as the point guard and always displays tremendous effort and focus.

Coach's comments on Kristin:
Kristin is currently the most heavily recruited player on the Lady Herd varsity team having received several letters from Division I and Division II colleges. She was last season's second leading scorer and top rebounder. Kristin tied the school record of 26 rebounds in her first game at the Varsity level. Last season she was named to the All-Delta League Second Team as a Sophomore.

45 Leslie Horton Senior 5'8" Small Forward
Coach's comments on Leslie:
Leslie returns to the Varsity team as one of the program's best defenders. She earned a starting position last season and missed only one start (Senior Night). Leslie played for the Freshmen and JV teams prior to her first Varsity season. Her competitiveness, intensity, and desire to win are not matched anywhere in the program, aside from perhaps Coach Benson's desire to win. Leslie has worked to improve her offensive skills while maintaining her solid defense.

THE NEW-COMERS:

10 Jennifer Enos Freshman 5'2" Point Guard
Coach's comments on Jennifer:
Jennifer is a Freshman elevated immediately to the Varsity level and played in the men's Freshman camp in the summer. She is one of the program's most fundamentally skilled players offensively and defensively. Her ability to shoot and run the point will be a valuable asset to this year's team.

21 Kim Souza Junior 5'3" Point Guard
Coach's comments on Kim:
Kim has played in the Lady Herd program from the Freshman team on up. She is one of the program's most reliable players, always participating in program fundraisers and events. Kim will add depth to our point and shooting guard positions.

23 Robin Starkey Junior 5'7" Shooting Guard
Coach's comments on Robin:
Robin joins the Varsity team with many skills that are needed on this team. She is a great athlete who can shoot and defend. Her quickness should prove to be valuable in our trapping defenses. She was a starter on the JV team last year and was the third leading scorer and named Most Improved Player.

24 Angelina Wion Sophomore 5'8" Shooting Guard
Coach's comments on Angie:
Angie started on the JV team as a Freshman and became its second leading scorer. She is a brilliant passer and has 3-point shooting range. Angie will be called on to play both wing spots and will also serve as an additional ball handler against pressing teams. At the end of the season, she was elevated to the Varsity team for the playoffs.

43 Amanda Bartling Junior 6'0" Center
Coach's comments on Amanda:
After playing on the Freshmen and Junior Varsity teams, Amanda made the Varsity team because of her hard work and physical post play. She will play a very important role as a reserve post player. The team will look to her to rebound and defend.

55 Vanessa Irving Junior 5'11" Forward
Coach's comments on Vanessa:
Vanessa came to Elk Grove her sophomore year and led the JV team in scoring and rebounding. She is a superior athlete who is a defensive stopper and big-time rebounder. As a reward for her efforts, she was elevated to the Varsity team for the playoffs and saw action in the First Round game. Her offensive skills are rapidly developing. Vanessa will be called on to score and defend this year and continue her success from last season.
