THE CAPTAINS:

22    Shawna Robertson  Junior   5'8" Shooting Guard
Coach's comments on Shawna:
Shawna is one of the hardest working players Coach Benson has ever had. She was picked by her teammates and coaches to be a captain based on her effort and attitude. She spent two seasons on the Lady Herd JV team before joining the varsity this season. Shawna will get time at the point guard spot as well due to her vastly improved ball handling. Her size and perimeter shooting will give us a lot of versatility at the guard spot.

55   Maren Winterrowd  Senior  5'10" Power Forward
Coach's comments on Maren:
Maren in the team's most experienced Varsity player. This is her third season at the varsity level after spending her Freshmen year as a starter on the JV team. As a Sophomore, Maren was named to the Cartwright Classic all tournament team, only the second EG sophomore to earn that honor. Her excellent interior defense and improved scoring moves, along with her positive attitude, will be a great asset.

RETURNING VARSITY PLAYERS:

13   Kari Busath        Senior  5'6" Shooting Guard
Coach's comments on Kari:
Kari begins her 4th season in the program and her 4th with Coach Benson. She played for two years on the JV team and last year at the varsity level. As a two-year starter at the JV level, she led the teams to 2nd place finishes and a combined 30-20 record. Last season, she backed up at the 2-guard and, reluctantly, at the point. This season, Kari will return to her more comfortable shooting guard spot and provide leadership to a young team.

24  Christina Ross  Senior  6'1"  Center
Coach's comments on Ross:
Ross, like Kari Busath, begins her 4th season under Coach Benson's tutelage. At 6'1", she is the team's tallest player and has developed a high percentage jumper from the foul line. Already an accomplished post passer, this added offensive threat will be an asset to the half court offense. Ross played a vital roll in last season's success and will be called upon to score and rebound this year.

32   Melissa Painter      Junior  5'9" Shooting Guard
Coach's comments on Melissa:
Melissa is a returning veteran to the varsity team playing up last year as a sophomore. Of the returning players, she brings the most game time experience to this year's team. Melissa served as the "Sixth Man" last season but makes the move to the starting line-up this season. Her improved shooting range and all around skills will make Melissa a go-to player this season.

THE NEW-COMERS:

5   Courtney Hetherington  Junior  5'5" Point Guard
Coach's comments on Courtney:
"Mother" has been in the program since her Freshmen year when she played on the Junior Varsity team. She sat out most of that first season with an injury but returned as a sophomore to the JV team. As the starting point guard, Courtney helped lead the team to a league championship and a 25-3 record. This season she will provide added depth and leadership to the point position

10   Tiffany Irving  Junior  5'9"  Forward
Coach's comments on Tiffany:
Tiffany is new to Elk Grove High School and the Lady Herd program. She played Varsity basketball as a Freshman in Virginia before moving to California. Tiffany is one of the best athletes on the team. Her strengths lie in her quickness on defense, rebounding, and inside scoring. The coaches look for Tiffany to own the boards and score in the pivot.

 11   Tracy Anstead  Junior  5'3" Point Guard/Manager
Coach's comments on Tracy:
Tracy earned her uniform mid-season after spending the first half as a playing manager. She was dedicated and devoted to helping the team. She will provide added depth at the point position. Tracy is a reliable and consistent mid-range shooter.

21   Lisa Moody  Junior  5'10"  Small Forward
Coach's comments on Moody:
Moody is one of the team's quickest athletes. Her best skills are on the defensive side of the ball. She has improved her shooting and her quick first step makes her a threat to attack the basket. Last season, Moody was elevated to varsity during the playoffs to provide extra depth.

23   Joanna Metzler  Junior  5'7"  Shooting Guard
Coach's comments on Jo:
Jo is the team's best perimeter shooter. She has the reputation of being a "gym rat," always trying to improve her game. Jo shoots well on the run as well as from beyond the 3-point arc. As a freshman, Jo played on the Varsity team and had success scoring at a high percentage. Her sophomore year, she elected to play at the JV level in order to get more playing time and to improve her game. The move paid off as she is a key reserve this year bringing instant offense off the bench.

31   Stephanie Lopez  Sophomore  5'6" Point Guard
Coach's comments on Stephanie:
Replacing the Lady Herd's all time scoring leader Amanda Fitzgerald isn't an easy task but Stephanie is the point guard of the Lady Herd future. Only a sophomore, she has solid ball-handling skills, is a pesky defender and is a more traditional point guard, looking to set up her teammates for shots. Stephanie is a superior passer and a leader by example. Last season, she was elevated to the varsity team for the playoffs to gain experience and provide extra depth.

34   Ashley Peterson  Junior  5'10"  Power Forward
Coach's comments on Ashley:
Ashley began her career at Elk Grove on the Varsity team. Her potential was evident but she elected to join the JV team at the midpoint of her Freshman season. She helped the JV team finish 2nd in league. As a sophomore, she remained on the JV team and was instrumental to their league championship season. This season, she has earned a starting spot and is the team's most consistent post player and a marvelous interior defender.

 42   Kristin O'Rourke  Sophomore  6'0"  Center
Coach's comments on Kristin:
"Beast" started as a Freshman for the league champion JV team. Her size and ability allowed her to overpower and dominate at the JV level. This season, she starts along side fellow sophomore, Stephanie Lopez. Kristin has a desire to be the best player on the court and works extremely hard to improve. She is a solid rebounder and post scorer.

45   Leslie Horton  Junior  5'8"  Small Forward
Coach's comments on Leslie:
Leslie has played in the program from the Freshman team on up. She has earned a starting job because of her excellent hustle and aggressive defense. Leslie is the team's best perimeter defender, often drawing the defensive assignment of the opposing team's best guard. She has improved her scoring and passing. Like Lopez, she is a leader on the court by example as she always plays hard.
